The advisory profession doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with the SEC. But I harbor a special appreciation for its current chairman, Mary Schapiro. She graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1977, the year before I did. I was in several economics classes with her. (And I’m sure she appreciated me being in the half of the class that made the top half possible.)
This is a wonderful interview with her conducted by Ariel Investments’ Mellody Hobson at the recent Investment Company Institutes General Membership Meeting. In this wide ranging discussion (about 45 minutes) Schapiro talks about her upbringing, her education, her career in public service and the challenging issues before the commission.
